Geek Chic: Horn-Rimmed Glasses

The legendary Buddy Holly and his famous glasses.

I like to refer to glasses of the black horn-rimmed persuasion as "Buddy Holly glasses," because 1) I love Buddy Holly and 2) because he influenced such amazing musicians as John Lennon and Elton John to wear spectacles while performing onstage.  I don't think the latter actually needed them, but said the glasses were a homage to Holly.

Now you see them everywhere -- and more often than not, for the sake of fashion.  Most recently, I saw the perpetually charming Zooey Deschanel sporting a pair in her new TV show (The New Girl, which airs this fall on FOX.  Shameless plug, I love her!).  Depending on who is wearing them, the glasses evoke a different kind of look:

Scarlett Johansson = sexy librarian
Kirsten Dunst = hipster
Britney Spears = ridiculous

I haven't even touched on the modern males who sport this look (Rivers Cuomo of Weezer, Johnny Depp, Woody Allen, that one guy who plays The Mentalist).  Because I wore glasses for so many years of my life, I have an aversion to wearing them, but I love the geek chic look.  There's just something so irresistible about gigantic horn-rimmed glasses dwarfing someone's face... really!

Then (L-R): Brigitte Bardot, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Grace Kelly, James Dean, Peter Asher, Dave Brubeck
