Olivia Hussey as Juliet and Leonard Whiting as Romeo in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 classic
I was flipping through my CD booklet and found a few old mix CDs I had put together. I listened to one on the way to work this morning, and a song came up that I'd totally forgotten about -- the Killers' cover of Dire Straits' 1980 song "Romeo and Juliet." It's an amazing love song, with the obvious reference to Shakespeare's play, but also more subtle references, including to the 1963 hit by the Angels, "My Boyfriend's Back."
The song also references the tune "Somewhere," from one of my favorite musicals, "West Side Story."Juliet says, "Hey it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack."He's underneath the window, she's singing, "Hey la, my boyfriend's back."
It's a great narrative, with beautiful guitar work by Mark Knopfler. Enjoy! You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die.And there's a place for us -- you know, the movie song."
