Design Inspiration: Miuccia Prada + The Great Gatsby

DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Joel Edgerton as her husband Tom.

I had previously posted about the costumes in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, but recently read that Miuccia Prada collaborated with the film's costume designer (and Luhrmann's wife) Catherine Martin to create some truly elaborate and stunning pieces.  The film was originally slated to be released this Christmas, but has now been moved to July 2013 (so I must quell my anticipation with any news I can find, particularly as it pertains to costumes).  Prada utilized their archives to adapt 40 decadent dresses for the film.  Carey Mulligan and Elizabeth Debicki look nothing short of amazing.

Prada revealed to Vogue in the September issue:
"I usually try not to literally reference periods in my work, because that's not the way I think.  But when I worked on the costumes, I realized how many pieces could become very 1920s with a little intervention and another point of view."
Prada has previously worked with Luhrmann on Romeo & Juliet, and this collaboration also seems to align with the director's vision, as most of his films are an interesting juxtaposition of old and new (obviously I am all about this).  I read that he's collaborating with such artists as Jack White, Jay-Z and Kanye for the soundtrack.

As far as costuming the men, from Leonardo DiCaprio's Gatsby to Tobey Maguire's Nick Carraway, Brooks Brothers provide some sharp '20s looks.  Forget jeans and t-shirts, can we all go back to dressing this fancy all the time?
