Fashion Flashback: The Belted Shirt Dress

The model wears a belted silk shirt dress by Michael Kors with an oversize runway watch and the Bedford bowling satchel.

I received Michael Kors' Summer Issue in the mail the other day and fell in love with the outfit above, which is so comfortable, chic and seventies-inspired.  The shirt dress look was popular in the late 1960s and '70s, as seen on Cybil Shepherd and others in a May 1969 issue of Glamour.

Fashion Flashback: Dree Hemingway in Dolce & Gabbana

Dree Hemingway at the Mulberry pool party at Coachella in Palm Springs.  Outfit from Dolce & Gabbana's S/S 2012 Collection.

With Coachella in full swing, I've seen a lot of notable outfits over the past couple of days -- but none really struck me quite as much as Dree Hemingway's perfectly summery Dolce & Gabbana number from their Spring/Summer 2012 collection, with the cropped top and fun chili pepper print.  She accessorized with a vintage purse and wedges by Isabel Marant.  It's a fresh update on a classic look, with its silhouette and bold prints, which the designers say was inspired by summertime in southern Italy in the 1950s.  Below are some similarly glamorous summer looks from some of my favorite actresses of the time.

Through the Lens: Scarlett Johansson in Vogue

Scarlett Johansson wears a blush satin dress by Dolce & Gabbana in the May 2012 issue of Vogue.  Photos by Mario Testino.

Scarlett Johansson looks like an old Hollywood starlet in the May issue of Vogue and I think it's a great look for her.  Though I love the styling, I think they may have overly airbrushed the photos (is it just me, or is her Avengers co-star Mark Ruffalo barely recognizable in these?).

According to the interview, she'll be playing Janet Leigh in a film about the making of Hitchcock's classic 1960 film Psycho.  Not sure I'm convinced that she's the best choice, but should be interesting. You can read the full interview here.

Through the Lens: DVF ♥ Current/Elliott

Tracy Antonopoulos stars as Philomena Geronimo Junior (aka "Jane") in Gia Coppola's short film for DVF Loves Current/Elliott.

Check out Gia Coppola's stylish and offbeat short film Writer's Block, which she directed for Diane Von Furstenberg's collaboration with Current/Elliott, starring her pal Tracy Antonopoulos as a struggling screenwriter in Hollywood, with a voiceover by the deadpan Aubrey Plaza and a rather random appearance by Ray freakin' Liotta.  I rather enjoy the frenetic music, by Coppola's cousin Robert Schwartzman.  The film features bold '60s-inspired floral fashions from the collaboration.

Style Inspiration: The Cast of "Girls"

Lena Dunham, sunglasses by Mercura; shirt and skirt by Louis Vuitton.
Allison Williams, dress by Elkin; necklace by Prada.
Zosia Mamet, dress by Elkin.
Jemima Kirke, dress by Elkin.

The cast of the upcoming HBO series Girls (which debuts on Sunday) look dreamy and --well, girlish -- in a photo shoot by Autumn de Wilde for New York Magazine.  The looks are rather '60s inspired, all short hemlines and Peter Pan collars.  I particularly love the dresses by the LA-based clothing line Elkin, (which on another note, I have seen a lot of on their muse, Z Berg of the band the Like and JJAMZ).

The photo shoot, styled by Shirley Kurata, reads a bit like a sunnier version of The Virgin Suicides.  I'm really looking forward to this show, which follows the travails of four twentysomethings in New York City trying to figure out life and love.  It was conceived, written and directed by Dunham, who is all of 25 years-old.  Said Dunham: "I feel like, especially women--and really, by women, I'm speaking for myself--have been waiting to see a reflection of somebody who feels a little more like someone they could know, or someone they could be." Tomboy style icon Francoise Hardy.

Lizzie Garrett Mettler's new book Tomboy Style was just released today.  I'm a huge fan of her blog of the same name, which celebrates tomboy style spanning over time and menswear-inspired fashions.  Her blog is the perfect balance of modern inspiration and influences of the past, which naturally, I love -- and she does it so well.  I'm excited to read her book.  In honor of the release, here are my top tomboy icons.

Style Inspiration: Emilia Clarke

Emilia Clarke wears a Christian Dior dress and earrings.  Photo by Williams & Hirakawa.

In celebration of the premiere of the second season of Game of Thrones (as though there are any more shows I need to be watching), here's a feature on the lovely Emilia Clarke from Vanity Fair's April issue.

AGE: 23. PROVENANCE: London. DRAMA-SCHOOL DRAMA: "I just applied to drama school, because I thought that's what people do. You just apply and you get in and that's it." WHAT ABOUT A WALKABOUT? After getting rejected from every school she applied to (all of two), Emilia took a "forced gap year." She "worked and worked and worked and worked"—in a call center, and a restaurant, and a bar. She traveled—through Southeast Asia and India and South Africa and Europe—and got "a taste of the real world." TAKE TWO: After attending London's Drama Centre (whose alums include Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy), Emilia was cast as Queen Daenerys Targaryen on HBO's award-winning series Game of Thrones. "I put the blond wig on and it's not me, it's Daenerys, and whatever fear and whatever sort of extreme emotion that I'm feeling as an actor—it's just brilliant for transferring into Daenerys." PLAYING DRESS-UP: The biggest change in the upcoming, second season of Game of Thrones? "I am way more corseted. It's not your typical bonnet duty that you have to go through as a young British actress."

 Dress by Valentino.
