Fashion Flashback: Sunday in New York (1963)

Henry and Peter Fonda pay Jane a visit on location on the set of 1963's "Sunday in New York."

I'll be moving to New York City next month and thought it appropriate to write about the fashions in the 1963 film Sunday in New York, which is airing this Sunday on Turner Classic Movies.  It's a '60s rom-com about sex, revolving around the dilemma of Eileen Taylor (Jane Fonda), who visits her womanizing airline pilot brother (Cliff Robertson) in the city and feels the pressures of premarital sex from her fiance (Robert Culp), all the while falling for a stranger she meets on a bus (Rod Taylor).  It's as zany and maybe even a little ahead-of-its-time as it seems.

The costumes were designed by Academy Award-winning designer Orry-Kelly, who most notably worked on such classic films prior as Casablanca, Some Like it Hot, Gypsy and An American in Paris.  I believe Sunday in New York was his last design credit, as he died in 1964 of liver cancer (Jack Warner read the eulogy).  A lot of the fashions from Sunday have been revived, from the nautical stripes to the midi skirts and skinny neckties.  Funnily enough, I noticed that the nautical outfit Jane wears (as seen below) is very similar to the one Ingrid Bergman wears in another of Orry-Kelly's films, Casablanca.

Music: JJAMZ's "Heartbeat" Video + Album Stream

Alex Greenwald, Jason Boesel, Z Berg, Michael Runion and James Valentine are JJAMZ.

I am so very excited for the release of JJAMZ's debut album Suicide Pact tomorrow.  The SoCal indie supergroup consists of James Valentine (Maroon 5), Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley), Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet), Michael Runion and Z Berg (The Like) -- the band name is comprised of the first letter of each of their names.

They just released a music video today for "Heartbeat," and it has a sort of campy '80s horror flick vibe (including the obligatory hot girl-in-peril-running-and-tripping-over-her-own-feet scene).  And if you haven't already decided that they are awesome as I think they are, you can stream the whole album here.
