Style Inspiration: Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg

English actress/singer Jane Birkin photographed in Made in Heaven jeans in the Cote d'Azur, 1973.

I've lived in NYC for almost a year now and it's interesting to observe how people dress as the climate changes from erratically cold and rainy to the warm summertime months.  There's an effortless chic to the way people dress around here.  So as style muses, I turn to the iconic Jane Birkin and her daughter, the actress and musician Charlotte Gainsbourg, who have the ability to make something as basic as tees and jeans look super stylish.

Both mother and daughter served as style muses (Jane is the namesake of the famous Hermes Birkin bag and Charlotte is a muse to Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquiere), but it turns out Charlotte isn't so comfortable with the term "style icon".  From the Wall Street Journal:
But despite being the inspiration for a revered fashion house, Gainsbourg bristles at being called a style icon. "I don't know what that means," she protests. "Style for me is a casual way of putting something on. It's not thought out but needs to suit your way of life. Now I like wearing the same sweater over and over again, then taking it off when it's smelly."
It's a pretty straightforward, low-maintenance approach -- it's best not to overthink it and just go with what makes you feel comfortable and good.
