Through the Lens: Surfing's Golden Age

Lennox Head, New South Wales, 1969.  Photo by John Witzig.

Seeing images by photographer and surfer John Witzig from his recently published a book A Golden Age, which chronicles a pivotal time for surfing in the 1960s and '70s in his native Australia, got me thinking of all of the great surf culture images of the era, including work from LeRoy Grannis and Jeff Divine.

Says Witzig of the fascination with times past (not like I would know anything about this):
Interest in the 1960s and ’70s seems to be never-ending. I can't say that I really understand why that should be so. You can't be nostalgic for something that you never experienced can you? Whatever, it's a very pleasant surprise when people respond positively to images taken decades ago.
